Immigration Politics

Once again the joys of immigration and the lacking ability of people to actually learn our language (that’s English for anyone still wondering) comes into current events. According to this article, on a BBC news site of all things (damn, now the British know about it too, but at least they speak English), there were some details about Hispanics and the upcoming elections. Of course there were some references made during this article that caught my eye and I thought it best to share them with you.
In December of last year there was a debate, but not just a debate, but a debate in Spanish! They even had someone translating for those few people who actually knew English in the room, or so I’m assuming based on the article. The details go on and reference the Hispanic vote, its worth, and how it will influence the Florida vote. All of which is pretty straight forward, but then it gets interesting when they say things like this:
Julio Fuentes says “Right now one out of four Hispanics drop out of school so that’s a huge concern.”
I guess this makes me wonder how a presidential change is going to change this. Are we talking about the dropout rate across the country or just in Florida? I wonder what the other kids are doing and how bad off their dropout rate is in comparison. Without all the facts it’s hard to see what his point is, or is he just pointing out the Hispanic dropout rate. He could possibly mean that Florida schools in general suck, instead it just might be they just suck for Hispanics – who really knows.
Another quote:
Mr Fuentes said the issue of immigration had a major impact on small businesses in sectors such as landscaping and construction, as they tried to recruit the most skilled employees in the state.
(This statement is just making me wonder if we ran out of skilled people in the state, and their only other course of action is to fix immigration cause there are no other people in the country that can landscape or construct buildings. It’s probably related to “cheap skilled labor” versus just skilled employees, but without the facts who really knows what his point is.)
“We are for a comprehensive immigration reform package. We are looking for something that is going to both fit the needs of the illegals that are currently here in our country, but at the same time let’s be smart and make sure that our borders are secured,” he said.
Fit the needs of the illegals? Did he just say we need to reform immigration to fit the needs of people who are in our country illegally? I think our need is what works for our country, its security and its economy, and let’s not worry about the needs of someone sneaking around and not paying taxes or believes his/her need to be here is greater than the need of going through due process.
And what immigration story wouldn’t be complete if not for another picture of someone “demonstrating” while wearing a Mexican flag on themselves. I can certainly admire someone who wants to be an American and is facing difficulties during the process, but if you’re going to be stomping around in public places demanding your right to the “American Dream” can you at least have the common sense to not be flying the colors of some other country? Basically that says to me “I want to be a Mexican in America, but have no real interest in becoming an American citizen.”

I saw one like this from a protester whose sign read: “Who will pick your froots?”
Apparently no one who graduated high school.

Protesting … a lost art form it would seem.
