Review: Cloverfield

I watched it when it was first released and was pretty excited about seeing it past the teasing trailer that was gracing theaters and homes alike.  I can’t say I was actually disappointed as much as left wondering about a lot of things the movie brought up during its short duration.  I guess this might be a spoiler in some regards so don’t read any further else be scarred for life, or at least find out things you might want to wait till you actually see the movie for yourself.

Perhaps I missed out on some things, but after the movie (hell the questions started about half way through the movie) I really started to ask myself ….

  1. According to the end the guy said 7 hours ago something attacked the city, so I get to wondering just how long was the media they were recording on the camcorder they used in the movie.  They started recording at a party, and that was even before the creature attacked so that just adds to the 7 hour recording time.  Even if it wasn’t a solid 7 hours of taping it certainly wasn’t just an hour of taping, unless that is the guy knew when the end of the movie was and plan accordingly.
  2. Along the same lines of “how much media was being recorded”, there were thoughts about how long does this battery last?  We’ve all been plagued with the reality of the life expectancy of batteries versus what they print on the label.  A battery that lasts for 7 plus hours, with a light, and some instances of a night vision tells me that this was one hell of a battery.  Whatever profit they miss out on they can certain recover by selling those batteries to the public, right?
  3. Okay seriously now, was the creature following the guy with the camera?  I think the creature wanted to know about the battery too from the looks of it. He was just down the street from the party, it follows them to the bridge, it makes sure they don’t leave via that bridge; they go back to where they once were and guess who was there once again?  Yes, the battery curious creature.  Okay, so the city isn’t huge, but you would think that this creature had something in mind aside from wander around the island all night.  Every time the wandering camera gang was around the creature was only a block of two away.

Well, that was the majority of what got me going after the movie.  There were more things that popped into my head on the ride back home, and don’t get me started after I called some friends and we discussed what we thought about it after.  The whole novelty of the movie being somewhat recorded via some amateur camcorder lackey was okay, but it did get a bit bordering on motion sickness a few times for many people around me.  The idea that I paid $10 bucks to go see a film where 1/5 of the time I was looking at broken chunks of asphalt really made me wondering if they intend on making the sequel in the same manner.  If so I’m going to just place it on my Netflix queue and save myself some cash, but at least still see the next part in this tale.  I guess what I’m saying is don’t expect a masterpiece, but it’s worth seeing, perhaps even more worth seeing if you wait till the DVD comes out.

Oh, last, but not least, another question … WTF does Cloverfield mean?
